Frequently asked questions
Direct answers about what Docognito actually changes, what it leaves alone, and how it behaves on Claude and ChatGPT.
What Docognito changes
- the visible page, redrawn as a document editor
- the browser tab title
- the tab icon
What it does not hide
- the address bar, which still reads claude.ai or chatgpt.com
- your browser history
- anything a workplace network, proxy, DNS log or monitoring agent can see
- anything a managed or employer-administered device can see
- the conversation itself, which OpenAI and Anthropic still receive and store
- anything captured by screen recording or proctoring software
- the page source, which anyone opening developer tools can read
Those two lists cover the whole disguise. one browser permission, storage is what makes the second one a short, checkable list rather than a promise: Chrome shows that permission before install, and there is nothing broader underneath it for the extension to reach with.
Common questions
Is Docognito free to use?
Yes. Docognito is free, with no account, no trial period and no payment screen at any point. There is no paid tier today. If one arrives later, it would cover additional features rather than the disguise itself.
What does Docognito actually hide?
It redraws the visible page as a plain document, replaces the browser tab title with a generic document name, and swaps the favicon for a plain document icon. That is the entire scope of the disguise, and it does not reach anything below the page itself.
Does it hide the address bar?
No. The address bar still reads claude.ai or chatgpt.com the whole time. An earlier build rewrote it to look like a document address, but that broke the assistant's own routing and was removed. An extension also has no way to change which domain the address bar shows.
Can my employer or IT department see that I am using it?
Docognito has no effect on that either way. A managed device, a workplace network, or monitoring software installed on the machine itself all operate below the browser page, and see the same activity whether the disguise is on or off. The extension only changes what is drawn on screen.
Does it work on both ChatGPT and Claude?
Yes. It runs on ChatGPT and Claude, covering claude.ai, chatgpt.com and the older chat.openai.com address. Gemini and other assistants are not supported.
What is the keyboard shortcut?
Shift and Escape, the only shortcut Docognito binds. Pressing it once hides the disguise and shows the real page underneath. Pressing it again brings the document view back, so the same two keys work in both directions.
Does it work on a phone or tablet?
No. Chrome on Android has no general extensions system for ordinary users, and Chrome on iPhone or iPad runs on Apple's WebKit engine, which does not support extensions either. Docognito only runs on a desktop or laptop copy of Chrome.
What permissions does it ask for?
One: storage, which lets it remember small settings such as whether the disguise is on and whether it is set to light or dark. It does not request access to browsing history, other websites, or anything beyond its own settings.
Does it slow ChatGPT or Claude down?
It does not add network requests or send anything anywhere. The disguise reads the page that is already loaded and redraws it locally in the browser. On a very long conversation there can be a brief moment where the document view catches up as the underlying page finishes loading older messages, the same delay the plain site would have anyway.
Does it still work when I upload a file or image?
Yes. Dragging a file onto the document page, pasting an image, or using the insert control in the menu bar all reach the same upload the plain site would use. A small chip above the typing line shows Uploading, then Attached, once the site itself confirms the file has arrived.
Can I switch between AI models with the disguise on?
Yes. A model chip in the menu bar opens a dropdown built from the assistant's own live model list, so it always matches what your account can currently use. A model your plan does not include shows greyed out and cannot be selected through the disguise.
What happens to my settings if I uninstall it?
Removing Docognito from chrome://extensions deletes the extension and the small settings record it kept, such as your light or dark choice. It has no effect on your conversations, which live in your Claude or ChatGPT account rather than inside the extension.
Do I need to create an account to use it?
No. There is no sign up, no separate login and no account tied to Docognito itself. You still sign in to Claude or ChatGPT the normal way, and the extension only changes how that page looks once you are there.
Will it work in Edge or another Chromium browser?
The Chrome Web Store listing installs on Chrome and other Chromium based browsers that use the same store, such as Edge and Brave. It is not currently published for Firefox, which uses a different extension system.
For a specific situation, such as a work laptop or a screen share during a call, the guides directory covers it in more depth than a short answer here can. Otherwise, add Docognito and try it on your next tab.
