Does the toolbar icon give the disguise away

Any installed Chrome extension shows a small icon in the toolbar by default. Docognito is one entry in that row rather than something hidden from view. Chrome itself lets you pin, unpin, or tuck any icon into the overflow menu. That setting, not the extension, controls whether it sits in plain sight.

Where the toolbar icon actually comes from

Every extension you install in Chrome gets a small icon in the toolbar the moment it is added, and that icon is drawn by Chrome itself, not by the extension. Docognito appears there the same way a password manager, an ad blocker or a shopping extension would: as one entry in a row Chrome maintains for everything you have installed.

Nothing about Docognito changes that placement by default. It does not hide its own icon, disguise its own name, or ask Chrome for special treatment in that toolbar. Whether it sits in plain view or tucked away is a setting you control, not something the extension decides for you.

That is a deliberate choice on Chrome's part, not a gap any developer can close. An extension that could hide its own presence from the browser would be a far larger concern than the one this article is about, since the same mechanism could hide anything else installed on the machine too. The toolbar row exists precisely so a user can always see what has access to their browsing.

Moving the icon out of plain view

Chrome has had a built-in overflow menu for extension icons for years, and it works on any extension, Docognito included.

  1. Open the extensions puzzle-piece menu

    Click the small puzzle icon at the right of the address bar. It lists every installed extension, pinned or not.

  2. Find Docognito in the list and unpin it

    Click the pin icon next to its name to remove it from the visible toolbar row. It moves into that same overflow menu instead.

  3. Repeat for anything else that stands out

    The same menu holds every other extension icon you would rather not have sitting in the toolbar. Tidying all of them at once looks more ordinary than tidying one.

Once unpinned, the icon is one click away behind the puzzle piece rather than a fixed fixture next to the address bar.

The same overflow menu also holds icons for anything else you have installed, which is worth using to your advantage. A toolbar with two or three visible icons draws less attention than one with a single icon sitting alone, so tidying the whole row rather than singling out Docognito reads as ordinary housekeeping rather than a deliberate move to hide one particular tool.

What Docognito does not do to its own icon

The extension does not rename or hide its listing in chrome://extensions

Unpinning the toolbar icon only changes where it sits, not what it is called. Opening chrome://extensions directly still shows Docognito by name, with its description and permissions listed in full. None of this reaches the address bar, which still reads claude.ai or chatgpt.com, which stays on claude.ai, chatgpt.com and chat.openai.com, and no other website regardless of where any icon sits.

A quick look settles for the icon, a search settles for the page

Someone glancing at your toolbar sees a row of small icons, and most people cannot name what half of them are without hovering. That is the level of scrutiny an unpinned or tucked-away icon is built to survive.

Someone who opens chrome://extensions on your machine, or who hovers over the icon long enough to read its tooltip, is doing something closer to an inspection than a glance. At that point the icon name is exactly as visible as any other extension name would be. The icon was never built to survive that level of looking, and no icon on any browser is.

Two separate jobs, not one

It helps to keep the two things apart. The disguise handles what a chat window looks like once you are inside it: the visible page, redrawn as a document editor, plus the browser tab title and the tab icon. The toolbar icon is a completely separate surface, governed by Chrome's own settings, and it says only that some extension is installed, the same way it would for a dozen other tools on the same machine.

Conflating the two leads to the wrong fix. Spending time trying to make the icon itself look like something else, or worrying that its presence alone proves anything specific, misses where the actual exposure sits. The page content is what a colleague reads without thinking. The toolbar icon is what somebody has to go looking for.

Does unpinning the icon hide it from chrome://extensions?

A glance at your toolbar and someone opening chrome://extensions are different levels of attention, and they call for different responses. For the first, unpin Docognito along with anything else that stands out, and let Chrome's overflow menu do the rest. For the second, no icon placement changes what they can see there, and the address bar was never part of the icon's job to begin with.

Use Docognito for the page itself, and Chrome's own pin setting for the row of icons above it.

Can I rename the Docognito icon or its listing?

No, an extension's name in chrome://extensions and in its tooltip is fixed by its listing and cannot be changed from within the browser.

Does unpinning the icon stop the disguise working?

No, unpinning only changes where the icon sits in the toolbar. It has no effect on whether the page, tab title or favicon are disguised.

Do other extensions get pulled into the overflow menu automatically?
