What incognito mode was actually built for

Read past the heading and the scope becomes obvious: a local record, not a screen.
Why the screen looks exactly the same either way
Open ChatGPT or Claude in a normal Chrome window, then open the same site in an incognito window, and place the two side by side. They render identically. Same layout, same colours, same tab title, same favicon. The private mode toggle lives entirely inside the browser's own handling of storage and history, and the website has no way to detect it and no reason to change how it looks because of it.

What actually gives an assistant away on screen
The things a passerby actually notices are visual, not procedural. A chat style layout with rounded message bubbles, a particular colour scheme, a logo in the corner, and a tab title that literally says ChatGPT or Claude are all recognisable at a glance, and none of them are affected by which kind of browser window they happen to be sitting in. Memory and visibility are different risks
